What's Going On?

Here are the titles of the three sections in this post:
Research Unit on Bullying: Calendar
Here are some other things that are coming up
What does this mean for the grade book?

In this post I will detail what to expect for the rest of this module along with what's coming up in class. I won't only be talking calendar, but points. Pay attention to all of it because it's crucial.

Here are the due dates I am planning as of right now. These are subject to change, but they will not move backwards on the calendar (earlier) they will only move forward (later). If they move forward it's because I expect a high-quality, polished product from you.
  • Go Over this blog post as a class -- tomorrow
  • Revise, if necessary, your questions for field research--tomorrow
    • Let's see if you can get it down to six questions that confirm or deny one or two of your core assumptions.
    • Write out these questions and conduct the research.
      • I recommend doing this either in person or
      • develop an online survey using "Google Forms"
    • Survey/question at least 20 people, though 200 is better.
    • Completed survey is worth 200 points
  • Go Over checklist/scoring guide -- Friday (February 22nd) during class.
    • After that, get back to work.
    • Replace, Add, Delete, and Reorder.
    • Conduct field research.
  • Go Over how to write a Works Cited Page -- Friday (February 22nd)
    • Replace, Add, Delete and Reorder.
    • If you're not done with the field research, then finish it.
    • It needs to go into the final draft of your essay.
  • Rough Draft -- Due Monday (February 26th) and should include the following:
    • Approximately 6 pages of research and persuasion about why LSHS should adopt this code of conduct.
    • Page 7 (or later) should be your code of conduct.
    • Your final page is a work cited page.
    • All of this together will be worth 600 points.
    • Everyone in your group, and I mean everyone, needs to bring a printed copy of the rough draft to class
  • Works Cited Page Revision -- Monday (February 26th) during class.
    • We will look at how terribly wrong your works cited page is
    • Then you will fix it
    • We will also go over how to cite things properly
    • We will go over the difference between the concepts of citation and documentation.
  • Grading one another and RADaR -- Wednesday (February 28th), and probably Thursday too.
    • This will be worth 100 points of processed writing  a piece.
    • Take this very seriously.
  • Final Draft (And I mean final) -- Friday (March 2nd).
    • 800 points
Okay, that was a lot of information, but I wanted to lay it all out so you can see what a massive undertaking this is. Hopefully you will appreciate this kind of scope as you move on to college.

Here are some other things that are coming up

Since this project is taking so long, we are going to have to make room for some other things. Here's what you should be aware of.
  • The grading period ends Friday, February 22nd
  • I will be out of the classroom on Tuesday the 26th for a district meeting
    • Not only will you have a substitute, you will have a benchmark test to take.
    • No cheating! I have eyes everywhere.
  • I will be out again on March 1st for a district meeting
  • I will be out March 8th for an inter-district meeting (grading your timed-writing)
Some where in the next couple of weeks, I will schedule a timed-writing for us. It will probably be the week of March 8th. I'm thinking Wednesday the 6th.

What does this mean for the grade book?

Most of what we are doing right now is categorized as "class participation" in the grade book. In the upcoming weeks, the assignments you are turning in fall into the following categories:
  • Class participation -- 15 %
  • Assessments -- 15 %
  • Processed Writing -- 35 %
  • Outside Reading -- 10 %
  • Timed-writing -- 20%
The percentages are the weight attached to each of those type of assignments. This is why, for some of you, your grade took a dive when you failed the quiz.

Your final draft of the research project on bullying is the only part of that will go into the processed writing (please keep in mind that the 800 points that are given for that assignment are will be split among the group members). This one assignment--which is really and accumulation of a bunch of little assignments--will make or break your grade. If you have been slacking, it's time to start picking up the pace. If one, or most, of your group mates have been slacking, then it's time to start busting heads.

One more thing, if you submit the final draft late, I will deduct 20 percent of the total grade every day it is late. Don't let it be late. You have had plenty of time. Please get your butts in gear and make it happen. Let's get it done this week, so that next week we can put our energy into revising, editing, and polishing a good piece of writing.

See you tomorrow.
